Overview
The HOLLAND Replaceable Series is a semitrailer kingpin system that combines a permanently welded upper-coupler housing with a removable bolt-in kingpin. This design allows a worn or damaged kingpin to be replaced without removing and rebuilding the entire weld-in housing.
SAF-HOLLAND offers replaceable kingpins in standard 2-inch and heavy-duty 3.5-inch SAE configurations. The housing system is designed so an approved 2-inch or 3.5-inch kingpin can be installed in compatible housings, providing greater service flexibility than a permanently welded kingpin.
The kingpin is secured using eight Grade 8 bolts with drilled heads and safety lock wire. The system is intended to reduce replacement labor and trailer downtime while maintaining a secure structural connection between the trailer and fifth wheel.

Coupling Type and Design
The Replaceable Series uses a conventional SAE kingpin profile below the trailer and a large bolted mounting flange above it. The mounting flange fits into a precisely machined weld-in housing incorporated into the trailer’s upper-coupler assembly.
The standard 2-inch version works with compatible commercial-truck fifth wheels. The 3.5-inch version requires a fifth wheel specifically designed and rated for a 3.5-inch kingpin.
How the Coupling System Works
As the tractor backs beneath the trailer, the trailer upper coupler slides across the fifth-wheel top plate. The fifth-wheel throat guides the replaceable kingpin into the locking mechanism.
The fifth-wheel jaw closes around the kingpin’s locking diameter. The kingpin transfers pulling, braking, turning, and articulation forces between the vehicles, while the upper-coupler plate transfers the trailer’s vertical load to the fifth wheel.
When replacement is required, the safety wire and eight attachment bolts are removed so the kingpin can be withdrawn from the housing. A correctly specified replacement is then installed and secured according to SAF-HOLLAND procedures.
Position and Function Within the Vehicle
The housing is welded into the upper-coupler structure at the front underside of the semitrailer. The replaceable kingpin projects beneath the trailer and provides the central connection with the tractor’s fifth wheel.
Kingpin position affects tractor-to-trailer clearance, turning geometry, axle loading, and overall combination length. The housing location must not be changed without appropriate engineering approval.

Load Ratings and Operating Capacity
Operating capacity depends on the selected 2-inch or 3.5-inch kingpin, the weld-in housing, the trailer upper-coupler structure, the fifth wheel, and the complete vehicle application. Kingpin diameter alone does not establish the capacity of the system.
The combination remains limited by its lowest-rated component, including the kingpin, housing, fasteners, welds, upper coupler, fifth wheel, mounting system, tractor frame, axles, suspension, tires, wheels, and completed vehicle ratings.
Articulation and Oscillation
The kingpin remains fixed within its housing during operation. Normal articulation occurs as the fifth-wheel top plate pivots on its mounting brackets while the tractor and trailer travel over grades and road transitions.
Side-to-side oscillation depends on the fifth-wheel design. The Replaceable Series Kingpin does not independently create oscillation and must be matched to a fifth wheel suitable for the intended terrain and service.
Sliding and Adjustment System
The installed kingpin housing does not slide or provide routine fore-and-aft adjustment. Weight distribution is normally adjusted using the tractor’s sliding fifth wheel or the trailer’s sliding axle system.
The interchangeable kingpin design allows an approved housing to accept the corresponding replacement kingpin size, but changing between 2-inch and 3.5-inch equipment also requires a compatible fifth wheel and complete engineering review.
Release and Locking Mechanism
The kingpin does not contain the tractor-to-trailer release mechanism. The mating fifth wheel captures and releases the kingpin through its locking jaw and operating system.
Within the trailer, eight Grade 8 bolts retain the kingpin in its housing. Safety wire passes through the drilled bolt heads to help prevent fastener rotation and loss of retention.
Air and Electronic Controls
Air and electronic controls do not apply directly to the Replaceable Series Kingpin. It is a mechanical component secured inside a welded housing.
The mating fifth wheel may use manual, air-operated, or electronically monitored release equipment. Sensors and warning indicators do not replace physical inspection of the kingpin, fifth-wheel lock, and upper-coupler contact.
Mounting and Installation
The weld-in housing must be selected for the trailer’s bolster-plate thickness and installed within an upper-coupler structure designed for the trailer’s type, capacity, and operating loads. The housing’s square exterior supports attachment to appropriate crossmembers and reinforcement.
SAF-HOLLAND specifies a low-hydrogen welding process for the AISI 4130H housing. Welding should alternate from side to side to limit heat buildup and housing distortion. The machined bore and threaded holes must be protected from weld spatter.
The kingpin is inserted squarely into the clean housing. All eight bolts are installed hand-tight and then tightened progressively across the bolt pattern using the manufacturer’s procedure. The bolt heads are secured with the specified safety lock wire.
Vehicle Frame and Mounting Compatibility
The Replaceable Series mounts to the trailer upper coupler rather than the tractor frame. Compatibility depends on the bolster-plate thickness, upper-coupler structure, crossmember arrangement, kingpin position, trailer capacity, and approved welding procedure.
The tractor must have a fifth wheel designed for the installed kingpin diameter and application. A standard 2-inch fifth wheel cannot be used with a 3.5-inch kingpin.
Mating Component and Trailer Compatibility
The selected kingpin must match the fifth-wheel throat, locking jaw, load rating, and coupling geometry. The housing must match the trailer’s bolster-plate thickness and structural design.
Compatibility should be confirmed using the complete housing number, kingpin kit number, dimensional drawing, trailer information, and fifth-wheel specifications. Parts should not be selected by appearance alone.

Driver and Operator Experience
A properly installed Replaceable Series Kingpin operates like a conventional fixed kingpin during coupling and road operation. The replaceable design primarily benefits the fleet and maintenance shop rather than changing the driver’s normal procedure.
Drivers should report difficult coupling, repeated false coupling, excessive tractor-to-trailer movement, unusual clunking, difficult fifth-wheel release, or visible damage to the kingpin or upper coupler.
Coupling and Uncoupling Procedure
Before coupling, the driver should inspect the fifth wheel, kingpin, and upper-coupler plate. The fifth wheel must be open and correctly tilted, and the trailer should be positioned at the correct height.
After coupling, the driver must verify that the fifth-wheel jaw is correctly closed around the kingpin, confirm full upper-coupler contact, and complete a controlled tug test.
Before uncoupling, the trailer should be positioned safely, its brakes applied, and its landing gear lowered. Pulling pressure should be removed from the fifth-wheel lock before release.

Lubrication Requirements
The exposed kingpin and fifth-wheel locking mechanism require lubrication according to the fifth-wheel manufacturer’s instructions. Correct lubrication reduces wear and helps the kingpin enter, rotate within, and release from the fifth-wheel lock.
SAF-HOLLAND specifies that a very thin coating of rust-preventive lubricant may be applied to the kingpin’s housing-contact surfaces during installation to aid future removal. Excessive lubricant should not be used where it could affect fastener retention.
Maintenance and Ownership Notes
The kingpin should be cleaned and inspected regularly for wear, cracks, deformation, and corrosion. Critical dimensions should be checked with an approved kingpin gauge rather than estimated visually.
Inspection should also include the attachment bolts, safety wire, housing welds, bolster plate, and complete upper-coupler structure. A serviceable kingpin does not make the trailer safe if the housing or surrounding structure is damaged.
Common Coupling Problems
- Excessive kingpin wear: Inadequate lubrication, worn fifth-wheel jaws, contamination, mileage, or misalignment can reduce the locking diameter.
- Loose attachment bolts: Incorrect tightening, missing safety wire, damaged threads, improper fasteners, or housing movement may reduce retention.
- Broken safety wire: Incorrect installation, bolt movement, corrosion, or physical damage can break the retaining wire.
- Kingpin difficult to remove: Corrosion, contamination, housing distortion, thread damage, or misalignment can prevent easy removal.
- False coupling: Incorrect trailer height or a damaged kingpin or fifth wheel can prevent proper jaw engagement.
- Excessive coupling movement: Kingpin wear, fifth-wheel jaw wear, loose fasteners, or housing damage may create movement.
- Cracked housing welds: Fatigue, improper welding, corrosion, overloading, or inadequate reinforcement can cause structural cracking.
- Housing distortion: Excessive welding heat or incorrect weld sequencing can distort the machined bore and prevent correct kingpin installation.

Safety and Service Precautions
The trailer must be securely chocked and supported before kingpin installation or removal. Failure to support the trailer correctly can result in equipment damage, serious injury, or death.
Only specified bolts, thread-locking provisions, and safety wire should be used. Damaged threads, an incomplete bolt pattern, missing safety wire, or substituted fasteners can compromise kingpin retention.
Do not restore a worn kingpin through unapproved welding, grinding, plating, or machining. Replace the kingpin using the manufacturer’s approved components and procedures.

Regulatory and Compliance Notes
SAF-HOLLAND states that properly installed Replaceable Series Kingpins meet or exceed applicable SAE and TTMA performance requirements. Compliance depends on correct model selection, housing installation, kingpin installation, fastener retention, inspection, and maintenance.
The trailer must also comply with applicable vehicle-safety, structural, weight, dimensional, and operating regulations. Changing kingpin size does not automatically change the trailer’s certified capacity.
Real World Operating Notes
The replaceable design provides its greatest financial benefit when the housing remains structurally sound. Damage to the housing threads, machined bore, welds, or surrounding upper coupler may require more extensive repair.
Kingpin wear should be measured with an approved gauge. Both the kingpin and fifth-wheel lock should be inspected when excessive coupling movement is found.
Replacement fasteners and safety wire are critical parts of the system. A new kingpin should not be installed using improvised bolts, missing safety wire, or damaged housing threads.
