Overview

The Eaton Cummins Endurant XD Pro is an 18-speed severe-duty automated manual transmission developed for the most demanding commercial truck applications.

It is the highest-capability model in the Endurant family. The XD Pro supports approved engines producing up to 2,050 lb-ft of torque and carries an unlimited gross combination weight rating when installed in a properly approved vehicle configuration.

The transmission is designed for extreme heavy haul, logging, oilfield, mining, construction, mobile-crane, towing and recovery, tanker, fire and rescue, and specialty transport operations.

Endurant XD Pro combines an 18-speed twin-countershaft geartrain with an Extreme Duty clutch, electronic clutch actuation, advanced GearLogic controls, dual PTO provisions, one to six configurable reverse gears, and specialized off-highway software.

Its high-speed reverse capability distinguishes the XD Pro from the standard Endurant XD. Trucks that must reverse for long distances can be configured with additional reverse ratios to improve productivity.

Rock Free mode and an Off-Highway Performance Goal help the transmission operate on sand, mud, snow, soft soil, natural terrain, and other difficult surfaces.

The XD Pro is approximately 225 pounds lighter than comparable UltraShift PLUS models while providing higher torque capacity, substantial PTO capability, and longer maintenance intervals.

Key Characteristics

The Endurant XD Pro provides 18 forward gears and as many as six configurable reverse gears.

Its 20.46:1 overall ratio spread combines a 14.32 first gear with a 0.70 overdrive top gear.

Small 19- and 20-percent steps between most forward gears help keep the engine within a productive RPM range while accelerating a heavy combination.

Three torque ratings are available: 1,650, 1,850, and 2,050 lb-ft.

The 2,050-lb-ft EXDP-20F118D uses an Extreme Duty High Torque clutch designed for the most powerful approved engine applications.

All XD Pro models use an Extreme Duty clutch rather than the standard clutch used by the regular Endurant XD. The stronger clutch provides additional thermal capacity, durability, and low-speed maneuverability.

The transmission has an unlimited maximum GCW rating, but that does not mean every truck can operate at any weight. The engine, clutch, axles, suspension, frame, tires, brakes, cooling system, driveshaft, permits, routes, and complete vehicle configuration must still be approved for the actual load.

How the Transmission Works

The Endurant XD Pro uses a mechanically geared twin-countershaft transmission controlled by an electronic transmission control module, shift actuators, engine communication, and an electronic clutch actuator.

When the driver selects drive, the transmission evaluates vehicle weight, grade, throttle position, engine torque, selected Performance Goal, and other operating conditions.

The controller selects an appropriate starting gear and commands the electronic clutch actuator to engage the Extreme Duty clutch.

During acceleration, Smart Gear Selection determines whether each gear is required. The transmission can skip gears when the load and terrain allow or use smaller progression steps when operating at high GCW.

Before a shift, the transmission requests an engine-torque reduction. This unloads the geartrain so the current gear can disengage.

The shift mechanism selects the next ratio while the transmission and engine controllers coordinate shaft and engine speeds. Engine torque is then restored.

Hill Start Aid applies the foundation brakes to help prevent rollback or unintended forward movement during a launch on a grade.

Urge to Move allows the truck to begin inching when the service brake is released.

Creep Mode provides controlled movement at engine idle with the clutch locked. The driver can select different gears to adjust vehicle speed.

Rock Free mode assists the driver in moving the truck between controlled forward and reverse directions when stuck in loose material.

The Off-Highway Performance Goal changes shift points and clutch behavior for natural terrain, soft soil, and severe operating conditions.

Common Specifications

Maximum Engine Torque

Available ratings are:

  • 1,650 lb-ft
  • 1,850 lb-ft
  • 2,050 lb-ft

The engine’s programmed peak torque must not exceed the specific transmission model’s rating.

Maximum Engine Horsepower

All published XD Pro models support approved engines producing up to 605 horsepower.

Engine compatibility also depends on torque, governed speed, electronic communication, flywheel housing, clutch configuration, cooling, and application approval.

Maximum Gross Combination Weight

The XD Pro has an unlimited maximum GCW rating in approved applications.

This rating indicates that the transmission does not impose a published upper GCW limit. It does not override vehicle ratings, axle limits, bridge laws, permits, or component capacities.

Extreme Duty Clutch

The XD Pro uses a self-adjusting Extreme Duty diaphragm-spring clutch.

The clutch includes stronger components designed for:

  • Higher thermal capacity
  • Improved durability
  • Better low-speed maneuverability
  • Reduced noise and vibration
  • Severe-duty launch conditions

The 2,050-lb-ft model uses a high-torque Extreme Duty clutch.

Electronic Clutch Actuator

An electronic clutch actuator controls clutch engagement and disengagement.

Clutch calibration is required after certain repairs, component replacements, or software procedures.

GearLogic Controls

Available GearLogic functions can include:

  • Hill Start Aid
  • Auto Neutral
  • Engine Overspeed Protection
  • Enhanced Engine Braking
  • Load-Based Shifting
  • Urge to Move
  • Creep Mode
  • Neutral Coast
  • Smart Gear Selection
  • Predictive Shifting

Feature availability depends on the truck, engine, calibration, and selected Performance Goal.

Rock Free Mode

Rock Free mode helps the driver move a vehicle stuck in mud, sand, snow, or other loose material.

The driver uses controlled accelerator input while the system manages the clutch and directional changes.

Repeated use after a clutch-temperature warning can damage the clutch and should be avoided.

Off-Highway Performance Goal

The Off-Highway Performance Goal adjusts shift points and clutch calibration for natural rolling terrain, soft soil, unpaved roads, and changing ground conditions.

The transmission generally favors controlled operation and fewer unnecessary shifts.

PTO Openings

The XD Pro provides:

  • 8-bolt bottom PTO opening
  • 4-bolt rear PTO opening

Both PTO drives operate at approximately 111 percent of engine speed.

PTO Capacity

Maximum combined output is:

  • 160 horsepower
  • 610 lb-ft of torque

The total output of all PTOs operating simultaneously must remain within the combined rating.

PTO engagement is controlled by the transmission to help prevent engagement under damaging conditions.

Precision Lubrication

The Precision Lubrication System directs lubricant to the gears and bearings rather than depending entirely on oil splash.

This helps reduce oil-churning losses and improve component protection.

Lubricant Capacity

A cooler-less, non-PTO configuration holds approximately 25.4 pints, or 12 liters.

Oil capacity can change when PTOs, pumps, cooling equipment, or other options are installed.

Recommended Lubricant

The transmission requires Eaton PS-386 approved lubricant.

Using an incorrect lubricant can affect efficiency, shifting, temperature, durability, and warranty coverage.

Lubricant Intervals

Published maximum intervals include:

  • On-Highway — 500,000 miles or five years
  • Vocational — 250,000 miles or three years
  • Stationary Operation — 2,500 hours or three years

Severe operation may require more frequent inspection and application-specific service planning.

Transmission Cooling

A transmission cooler may not be required when GCW remains below 110,000 pounds and the application meets Eaton Cummins requirements.

Heavy-haul, high-temperature, PTO-intensive, or severe-duty applications may require additional cooling.

Internal Sensors

The transmission includes fluid-pressure and oil-temperature monitoring.

Internal wiring and sensors are protected within the transmission design to reduce exposure to corrosion and physical damage.

Transmission Weight

Published weight is approximately 813 pounds.

The installed system weighs more after lubricant, PTOs, pumps, cooling equipment, mounts, wiring, and output hardware are added.

Driver and Operator Experience

The XD Pro provides automated 18-speed operation without a clutch pedal.

The transmission selects the starting gear according to vehicle weight, grade, engine torque, and throttle position.

Hill Start Aid helps prevent rollback when starting on an incline.

Urge to Move allows the truck to begin inching after the brake is released.

Creep Mode provides controlled movement at engine idle with the clutch locked. This can improve low-speed maneuvering around equipment, trailers, job sites, and recovery scenes.

The six-reverse configuration can improve productivity when a truck must back long distances. Higher reverse ratios require additional driver awareness because the vehicle can travel considerably faster than in a conventional low reverse gear.

Rock Free mode helps free a vehicle from loose ground, but it should not be treated as a substitute for proper recovery equipment.

Manual mode allows the driver to request or hold a gear when approaching grades, operating off highway, descending with the engine brake, or maneuvering a heavy load.

The transmission may refuse a requested shift that could over-speed the engine, lug the engine, or exceed an operating limit.

Maintenance and Ownership Notes

The XD Pro requires Eaton PS-386 approved lubricant.

Maximum on-highway lubricant intervals extend to 500,000 miles or five years.

Vocational operation uses a shorter maximum interval of 250,000 miles or three years.

Stationary and PTO-intensive applications may use an hour-based interval.

The Extreme Duty clutch is self-adjusting, but clutch wear, temperature events, and actuator operation must still be monitored.

Transmission-fluid pressure and temperature warnings should be investigated immediately.

The electronic clutch actuator, shift components, transmission control module, sensors, grounds, power connections, and data-network wiring require compatible diagnostic procedures.

PTO mounting bolts, seals, pumps, hydraulic connections, controls, and driven equipment should be inspected regularly.

Cooling equipment should be included in preventive maintenance when the transmission is fitted with a cooler.

IntelliConnect remote diagnostics can help fleets identify fault codes and prepare repairs before the truck reaches a service facility.

Common Transmission Problems

Transmission Will Not Engage a Gear

Possible causes include low voltage, an electronic clutch-actuator fault, speed-sensor failure, data-network problems, an active fault code, low air pressure, or internal mechanical damage.

Clutch Overheating

Repeated creeping, heavy launches, prolonged backing, holding the truck with the accelerator, or excessive Rock Free operation can overheat the clutch.

High-Speed Reverse Problems

Incorrect programming, sensor faults, axle-ratio mismatch, or unsuitable tire-size configuration can affect high-speed reverse operation.

Electronic Clutch Actuator Faults

A failed actuator, damaged wiring, incorrect calibration, clutch wear, or excessive heat can interfere with launching and shifting.

Shift-Quality Problems

Harsh, delayed, or unnecessary shifts may result from sensor problems, software calibration, engine communication, unsuitable Performance Goals, or driveline faults.

Transmission-Fluid Pressure Warning

Low lubricant, internal flow restrictions, leaks, incorrect lubricant, or sensor failure can trigger a pressure warning.

Transmission Overheating

High GCW, severe grades, slow vehicle speed, heavy PTO loads, inadequate cooling, or low lubricant can cause excessive temperature.

PTO Engagement Problems

The transmission can refuse PTO engagement when interlocks, speed conditions, detected loads, programming, or faults fall outside the approved operating range.

Vehicle Data-Network Problems

The transmission depends on communication with the engine, brakes, and other controllers. Wiring, connector, module, or ground faults can interrupt operation.

Oil Leaks

Leaks may occur around PTO openings, case joints, sensors, output seals, cooler connections, or other sealed surfaces.

Regulatory and Compliance Notes

The XD Pro’s unlimited GCW rating applies only to the transmission and does not make a truck legally unlimited in weight.

The engine, clutch, driveshaft, axles, suspension, frame, wheels, tires, brakes, fifth wheel, trailer, and all other components must be rated for the load.

The engine’s peak torque must remain within the selected transmission model’s rating.

PTO equipment must remain within the combined 160-horsepower and 610-lb-ft limits.

High-speed reverse must be configured for the truck’s axle ratio, tire size, application, and safe operating requirements.

Oversize and overweight operations may require permits, approved routes, axle-spacing compliance, escort vehicles, travel restrictions, signs, flags, and additional safety equipment.

Truck programming, speed sensors, brake controls, engine communication, and transmission calibration must remain compatible.

Real World Operating Notes

The XD Pro’s six-reverse configuration can significantly reduce the time required to back long distances in logging, oilfield, construction, mining, and specialty operations.

Higher reverse gears should be used only when the route, visibility, spotter procedures, vehicle configuration, and company policy permit.

The Extreme Duty clutch improves low-speed capability but does not eliminate clutch heat. Repeated creeping and rocking should be minimized.

Rock Free mode is useful in loose terrain, but drivers should stop if the system reports excessive clutch temperature.

The 0.70 overdrive top gear requires careful matching with the rear-axle ratio, tire diameter, engine cruising range, and expected gross weight.

The unlimited GCW rating makes XD Pro suitable for extreme heavy-haul applications, but the complete truck and route must still meet all mechanical and legal requirements.
