Delco Remy supplies starters and alternators for commercial trucks, buses, vocational vehicles, and off-highway equipment. Its product range supports engine starting, battery charging, and the electrical demands of commercial operation.

Truck Equipment Atlas covers Delco Remy products to help readers understand starter designs, alternator construction, charging-system features, and application differences.

History and Background

Delco Remy traces its roots to 1896, when Frank and Perry Remy founded the Remy Electric Company in Anderson, Indiana. Remy Electric and Dayton Engineering Laboratories, known as DELCO, became part of United Motors in 1916. General Motors acquired United Motors in 1918.

The rotating-electrical business separated from General Motors in 1994 as Delco Remy America. The business later operated as Remy International, which BorgWarner acquired in 2015.

In 2023, the Delco Remy starter and alternator business became part of PHINIA following its separation from BorgWarner. The brand celebrated 130 years of electrical-system heritage in 2026.

Technology and Product Development

Delco Remy’s alternator range includes conventional brush designs and brushless models. Brushless construction removes brushes and slip rings from the field-current path, reducing associated wear points.

Available charging features include Remote Sense, which allows the regulator to account for voltage loss between the alternator and the battery system. Output, mounting arrangements, terminals, and feature availability depend on the selected model and part number.

Starter technologies include gear reduction, electrical soft-start, and overcrank protection on applicable configurations. These features address cranking performance, engagement, and protection from excessive operating heat.

Delco Remy also provides application-identification tools and technical training to support correct product selection and starting-and-charging-system diagnosis.
