International is an American commercial vehicle brand serving highway freight, regional delivery, construction, municipal services, and specialized vocational operations. Its equipment includes commercial trucks, diesel engines, and integrated powertrain systems.

International Motors is part of TRATON GROUP. This page brings together the brand’s history, equipment categories, company information, and links to International and legacy Navistar product profiles published on Truck Equipment Atlas.

History and Background

International’s corporate heritage includes International Harvester, formed in 1902 through the combination of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, Deering Harvester Company, and other agricultural equipment businesses. The organization expanded beyond agricultural machinery into engines and motor vehicles.

Following the sale of major business divisions, the company became Navistar International Corporation in 1986, concentrating on commercial vehicles and engines. International continued as the brand used on its truck products.

TRATON acquired Navistar in 2021, bringing the business into a commercial vehicle group that also includes Scania, MAN, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus.

In 2024, Navistar announced its corporate name change to International Motors, effective October 1. The change reunited the company’s corporate identity with the International name already familiar to truck operators.

Technology and Product Development

International’s development includes integrated powertrain engineering. The S13 Integrated Powertrain brings the engine, T14 transmission, and aftertreatment system together as a coordinated package rather than treating each as an unrelated component.

The company’s membership in TRATON GROUP connects its North American vehicle business with a wider commercial vehicle engineering organization. Product development must still address the operating requirements of the trucks and markets in which the equipment is used.

Equipment availability varies by model year and configuration. Current powertrain technology should not be assumed to apply to earlier International or Navistar vehicles.

Related Brands and Equipment

International shares TRATON GROUP membership with Scania, MAN, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. Their products retain separate brand identities. Legacy MaxxForce engine profiles are included in this page’s product directory because of their Navistar heritage.

International trucks may also use equipment supplied by other manufacturers. Those components should be researched under their own brands and matched to the vehicle’s original configuration.
